This is what bridal beauty looks like around the world

From traditional nose rings to modern day makeup...

09 Sep 2019

Ever wondered how a bride in Mumbai wears her hair on her wedding day? Or what beauty traditions a Japanese wedding would follow?

While every bride has her own unique sense of style, inspiration can often come from their culture, heritage and upbringing.

Here's what that looks like in different parts of the world...

INDIA

Indian brides, particularly those loyal to Hinduism, opt for red over white as red symbolises commitment, spirituality and fertility. It's not uncommon for nose rings to be worn on the left side of the face, as a mark of beauty. Henna adorns the hands and feet (drawn on by either a professional mehndi artist or relative the day before)and eyes are often lined with deep black kajal to add emphasis around lashes.

JAPAN

Japenese brides can vary in dress depending on religion. A traditional Shinto ceremony sees brides dressing in white from head to toe (including makeup), but more modern brides may opt to wear a red kimono, a white dress or something else. Instead of painting there faces white, many Japanese brides now choose to opt for natural-looking makeup with shades of pale pink across eyelids or soft greys and browns blended out. One tradition often embraced by Japenese brides is accessorising their updos with floral accessories or a headdress.

KOREA

Korean brides are all about enhancing their features with groomed brows, black eyeliner, fluttery lashes and pink-flushed cheeks. Dresses are usually white, with veils and pretty accessories in the hair. Skin is always flawless, as expected from our double-cleansing Korean pals.

BRAZIL

Our resident Brazillian beauty and Social Media Assistant Carolina says that brides in Brazil would definitely visit a dermatologist before their big day to ensure their skin is as glowy as possible. "It's not as expensive back home, so you can visit regularly", she says. Another tradition? Writing the names of all your single friends into the hem of your dress, as a good luck symbol for them to marry soon.

CHINA

Red is an important colour to the Chinese, symbolising happiness, prosperity and good luck and is often incorporated into the wedding through the dress, bouquet or beauty look. Red and gold hair accessories are a popular choice, with updos also favoured.

ARMENIA

Armenian brides are known to thread their entire face in the lead up to the wedding (eyebrows excluded of course), to ensure the smoothest canvas for makeup application. It's similar to dermaplaning in the way that it will remove any peach fuzz or wispy hairs on the face to leave it baby soft and hair-free.
