You’ve got the dress, sorted your flowers and the venue is booked but now for the next big decision: hair and makeup. But where to start? So many questions and not enough time. In celebration of the now-legendary Brides the Show taking place on 21st-23rd September (more about that below), Sophie Cullen from e Nast Brides shares the top beauty tips every bride-to-be needs to know in the run-up to her big day....
How to nail that coveted dewy skin
One question I always get asked from brides-to-be? "How do I get dewy, radiant skin for my big day?". There’s more than one answer to this: vitamins, changing your diet and exercise, to name a few, but one that I find really works is facials. Book yourself in 6 months before your big day – this way you can trial a few and find out what works for you and from then, every 4-6 weeks. My fave? Nichola Joss at Cowshed – they’re bespoke facials include lymphatic drainage massage, which is highly effective due to its ability to prevent sluggish circulation and remove any unwanted toxins, plus it helps to get rid of puffiness.
How to pick the perfect makeup artist
Trials, trials, trials! Invest in a makeup artist and do at least one trial. So many brides tell me how they regret not trying out different looks and products and some even ended up taking off all their makeup and doing it again themselves. It’s important to build a relationship with your makeup artist – at the end of the day, you are trusting them to do your makeup on the most important day of the year. Unsure of where to start? Visit your local department store and speak to the different counters – a lot of these artists are freelance and do wedding makeup on the side anyway. Another great place is Instagram – search through the local hashtags to you and them via there profile.
What to keep in your day clutch
If you’re marrying abroad and want a super quick refreshing pick-me-up, then a mist is your new BFF. My faves? Eve Lom, Caudalie and Fresh. Plus, it prolongs makeup meaning no touch-ups required and you can dance until the small hours.
Waterproof mascara is a must! I’ve sobbed my way through romcoms and sweated through workouts to find the best five mascaras for you. They may be considered ‘luxury’ but they pass the tests and make lashes look beautifully thick without flecking or leaving those dreaded pompom ends.
1. Truly waterproof mascara, Clarins, £21.50
2. No smudge mascara, Bobbi Brown, £20
3. Le Volume de Chanel Waterproof, £25
4. Sumptuous waterproof masara, Estee Lauder, £21
5. Lash power mascara, Clinique, £19
