Phoebe Philo at Celine is the Pied Piper of fashion - where she goes, the fashion pack will follow. The brand is a byword in understated, modern (painfully expensive) femininity. The current obsession with Stan Smiths? That was Philo. The reason we're all wearing polo necks? Philo encouraged us that too. Wide legs trousers? Also her doing. Now it's cowboy boots that have been sprinkled with her fashion fairydust.
What she does sparks instant desire from fashion editors and journalists; everything she does is done with a hint of cerebralism. Philo is also famously private, aloof even, and there's nothing that ignites the fashion elite's interest more than someone who won't let them in. It's like perpetually wanting to be friends with the cool girl at school, but her only treating you with cordial niceties. Truthfully, if Philo told everyone those hideous bandana tops we all wore in our ill-informed early teens, a trend would most probably be born. This is the woman that got some of the world's most stylish women wearing furry Birkenstocks. FURRY BIRKINSTOCKS (please see evidence below).
So for next summer, she suggests that we all wear lingerie as outerwear, which doesn't seem too far-out a concept, but what really got us going was the footwear that she decided to pair her negligee-style dresses with - cowboy boots. Now this fashion editor has been moderately obsessed with cowboy boots since the age of 17 and is tremendously pleased to see that Philo is now on board. They have a rock 'n' roll air to them, only matched by a chunky biker boot, and the idea of being a badass cowgirl who spends her waking hours broodily kicking dust next to a cowboy that looks like Clint Eastwood is an appealing one.
Philo's version veers away from fancy dress realm. They come without the traditional decorative stitching, instead adorned with a few simple studs and a wooden Cuban heel. We LOVE them. On the Celine catwalk, they were pared with wide-leg trousers, although we'd be inclined to match them with a pair of black skinny jeans a la Mossy and Alison Mosshart. Those predisposed to bohemia could style theirs with a prairie girl-style floaty dress.
Philo has spoken - expect to see a cowboy boot coming to a high street near you soon…
