Hilary Duff on recycling, regrets, and her dirty little beauty secret

The Younger star answers our most pressing beauty questions.

10 Sep 2019

To say Hilary Duff has a lot on her plate would be an understatement. The 31-year-old just wrapped the sixth season of Younger on TV Land (and a seventh is already in the works); she’s starring in the upcoming Lizzie McGuire reboot; and, oh yeah, she’s a mum to two young kids. Duff has opened up in the past about how motherhood has changed her life. She told Today a few years back that she’s now “always worrying.”

One of her growing concerns? Like many, Duff is making it her personal mission to be more green because of the very real issues regarding climate change, yes, but also because of her children, Luca and Banks.

“We owe it to our kids (to recycle) because this planet is going to be their future and their home,” Duff tells Glamour. “Our impact is going to make a difference for their future.”

Duff’s passion for recycling is why she recently partnered with Walmart and Unilever, the parent company of brands including Dove and Love Beauty and Planet, to launch “Bring It to the Bin.” The aim of the program, Duff says, is to make recycling easy and accessible, especially for busy mums who are being pulled in a million directions, which she knows from experience.

Everything she does these days is on a tight schedule, including her beauty regimen. “My routine has gotten so short, I can literally do my hair and makeup in 10 minutes,” she says. The same goes for answering our Big Beauty Questions. We caught up with the actress to have her run through our rapid-fire questionnaire and talk more about how she’s cleaning up her routine.

What’s one beauty trend you love but would never try?

Coloured lipsticks. A really different coloured lipstick, like a blue. You see it in the magazines, and I feel like it’s very runway or great for editorial, but maybe you couldn’t pull it off in real life. But I think it would be really fun.

Do you have any beauty regrets?

I went through a phase where I basically had jet-black eyebrows— and still as a blonde. Jet-black eyebrows! I love a big brow. I live for a big brow, but now the tone of my brows is a little more toward my hair colour.

What’s one beauty rule that you swear by?

As tired as I am at the end of the day, I really try to wash my face and stick to a regimen. I’m a bit of a product junkie, so I can’t sit here and be like, “This is the only product I use that works for me.” That’s not really how I roll. I love oils and serums and stuff like that. I think just sticking to a regimen and taking care of your skin before you go to bed from wherever you’ve been that day, or whatever dirt is on your face— I try to get that nice and clean before I go to bed. But if I’m going quickly out of the house, I honestly use a CC or BB cream just to have sunscreen or even out my skin tone, and then a brow gel. I curl my lashes and pop mascara on, and then I go.

What beauty rule do you think is total B.S.?

I’m lucky enough to work with so many amazing makeup artists that I’ve learned a lot of tips and tricks when I get to have a little more time. I have this dirty little secret that I love to shave my nose. It takes me, like, two seconds. I love the way (my skin) looks with it way more than without it. So I try incorporate it when I can.

You travel all the time. What country or city gives you the most inspiration?

If I’m going to New York, I definitely feel inspired by the city. I tend to wear darker colours and feel like my looks are a little edgier there. I’m also walking, so I’m wearing boots instead of heels or sandals. I went to Mexico (over the summer), and I think I packed every colourful item in my closet. I lean in to what I feel is the vibe for that place.

Is that reflected in your beauty too? In Mexico, did you find yourself doing brighter colours for your eyes or anything like that?

I wore a lot of bright lipsticks. I brought a coral and a hot pink, and I never do that here in L.A. But we were at the beach all day, and I was there for a bachelorette (party), so all of us had tanned skin, and then I just had a pop of lip on. It was so easy.

You’re stranded on a deserted island. What three beauty products do you bring with you?

I’d bring the thickest oil that I could for my face. Kevyn Aucoin makes this product that’s rose gold and really glossy. It’s so pretty. It goes on your cheeks and eyes. A little bit goes a long way. I’d probably pack that because I like to be dewy and glowy. And then finally I’d bring a tinted brow gel.

What colours are you loving for your nails right now?

Over the summer I had a peachy coral on my nails, and also two different nudes on that were bisque colour on half and a very nude, pinky colour on the other half. So they were, like, half-and-half.

When you’re having your glam done, what’s your go-to music?

It really depends on my mood. I listen to anything from Otis to Cardi B to Tame Impala. Sometimes I’m just a Top 40 girl.
