This overnight mask is giving my natural hair so much life

Now my strands are packed with moisture.

While I’m all in on a dedicated skincare regimen at night, I don’t always make time for one for my natural hair — which can mean waking up with dry, dehydrated curls more often than I’d like. Don’t get me wrong: I refuse to fall asleep without a silk or satin pillowcase under my head, but sometimes even that’s not enough to keep my hair’s moisture levels in check. Since my curls tend to drink up leave-in conditioners, oils, and creams in one fell swoop, I try to spoil them at least once a week with a deep conditioning treatment—but I don’t always have time to wait 10 to 15 minutes for it to settle in and later rinse it out. Enter Mielle’s Moisture RX Hawaiian Ginger Moisturizing Overnight itioner or as I like to call it, the overnight hair game changer.

This product is essentially the hair-care equivalent of a full night’s rest or quite literally your hair getting its well-deserved beauty sleep. It’s made with hydrating ingredients like shea butter, avocado, and coconut oils that leave it feeling soft and supple by morning. Bonus: It smells like a tropical island vacation in a jar. Its consistency is creamy yet lightweight which makes my hair feel coated but not weighed down. I typically scoop out about three fingers worth of product at a time and spread it into my palms before adding it to my strands for even application.

I massage the mask in my hair in sections, beginning with the ends and moving up to the roots so that I make sure to cover every curl. It dries to a tacky consistency that cradles my hair and provides hold that doesn’t feel super sticky. Next I throw a shower cap on (a little weird at first but I eventually got used to the idea), jump into bed, and dream about how fire my curls will look in the morning. Since a shower cap is typically used to help activate a deep conditioner through the heat released from the scalp, it makes sense why I’d wear one with this overnight mask—and sleeping in it is actually more comfortable than I thought.

By the next morning, the treatment completely sinks into my hair (I was serious when I said my strands were dehydrated!) and there’s not a drop of product leftover in my shower cap, which surprises me every time. After a rinse in the shower and a quick dry with my diffuser, my curls have new pep in their step. Overall my hair feels stronger and healthier each time I use this overnight mask—which is now essentially every other day. All I have to do is fall asleep.
