The 3 most common skincare blunders brides experience the night before their wedding - and how to tackle them

Keep calm and follow this advice

Despite prepping your skin for months ahead of your wedding, beauty blunders can strike at the final hour. We're talking dark circles, oily skin, dry patches and, gulp, juicy spots.

Thankfully, we've enlisted the advice of skincare guru Debbie Thomas, who knows exactly how to stop last-minute beauty predicaments in their tracks.

We asked Debbie to share a step-by-step guide to tackling the biggest skincare problems a new bride might face before their big day: dark circles and puffy eyes, oily skin and dry skin patches.

Dark under-eyes

If you have dark circles that come and go, it's most likely associated with circulation and toxins, so a good night's sleep and drinking plenty of water will help.

A quick fix for puffiness would be lymphatic drainage and using an ice cube to stimulate microcirculation in the area. Spend a minute or two constantly moving the ice cube around and under the eye area. If your eyes are always puffy, this could be due to deeper rooted problems like the small pad of fat that sits behind the eye detaching and sliding forwards to create a bulge. This will normally require professional treatment (even surgery!) so if you dread surgery, consider getting advice from a professional at least 6 to 12 months before your big day so there will be no issues with healing.

Dry skin patches

Again if the dry patches are something you always have, then you may have an inflammatory skin condition like psoriasis, eczema or dermatitis, all of which can flare up in times of stress.

Think meditation and regular uninterrupted sleep to reduce stress and to help the skin repair more effectively and reduce inflammation in the body. Most dry skin will benefit from the addition of lipids, like ceramide, to help repair the barrier function (upper protective layers).

Greasy skin

Oily skin is normally due to your oil glands being over active due to hormonal stimulation. On its own, having oily skin can be easily managed through good home-care products containing balancing ingredients like retinol.

Retinol takes 6-9 months to show the best results so don’t wait until the last minute to invest. If your oily skin is resulting in breakouts and congestion, look at products containing ingredients like AH and BHAs as well as purifying masks like Medik8s purifying activated charcoal refining mask. If you are planning to wear a mask before the wedding day, make sure you only use a mask you have already tried so you don't experience any surprises!
