GLAMOUR columnist, Nikki Makeup, shares her foolproof guide to enhancing your natural beauty

Au natural.

04 Sep 2019

This year has been all about enhancing your natural beauty - whether it’s freckles, textured hair, or as simple as your eye shape, and I love enhancing the beauty of my clients rather than trying to change their face. So swap your contour sticks and eye tapes in favour of some of my favourite products to subtly enhance your features and work with what you’ve got.

All about the base

Beautiful skin starts with skincare and prepping the skin before applying makeup makes a huge difference. For a serious skin transformation, the Orveda Overnight Skin Recovery Masque plumps dehydrated complexions and gives your skin that extra glow in the morning.

To prep your canvas, try a smoothing primer such as Dior’s Backstage Face & Body Primer that works on all skin types (it’s hydrating, anti-shine and blurring). It’s important not to overload the skin with product so I love using multitasking formulas. For a super dewy and no-makeup-makeup look, try Laura Mercier’s new illuminating formula of the cult Tinted Moisturiser Natural Skin Perfector. Not only does it include SPF30, but its silky formula covers any redness, evens out the skin tone and can be built up to your desired coverage.

Enhance your eyes

When it comes to eye makeup, use minimum products for longevity. Add subtle definition by using crease-free eyeshadows or tinted eye primers such as bareMinerals’ Gen Nude Eyeshadow + Primer or the NARS Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base which both add a slick of colour while smoothing the eyelid. To elongate your eyes, draw out your winged eyeliner with a liquid or gel liner such as Delilah’s Gel Liner, but for a softer and more natural finish, diffuse the wing using a dark brown powder eyeshadow at the outer corners.

Most people ask how to get thicker and fuller eyebrows, and to recreate my signature fluffy brow you just need the right product, whether you have naturally full brows or not. I love the new Tom Ford Brow Perfecting Pencil which has a micro-fine nib for easy precision and a soft, powdery finish. Or for those who want to add more definition, try Glossier’s Brow Flick which is great for mimicking hair-like strokes.

The finishing touches

Embrace your natural skin texture by adding or bringing out your freckles with Freck - a super quick and foolproof freckle pen that gives the most natural finish. Dot around the nose and cheeks with its super-fine nib for precision, and blot with your fingers.

To create a healthy flush, choose cream blushes or bronzers that melt seamlessly into the skin, such as bareMinerals’ new Bounce & Blur Blush that has a unique bouncy cream-to-powder texture. I love the shade Blurred Buff which looks beautiful on medium or dark skin tones, or as a blush-bronzer hybrid for fairer skin tones.

Overlining the lips is the easiest way to plump your pout, but the trick is to keep the overlining more prominent on the centre of the mouth, keeping the shape of the cupids bow closer together for a more feminine look. Colour the outer part of the mouth for a fuller look (the Sisley Phyto- Levres Perfect lip liners have a super creamy formula), and finish with a coat of your favourite lipstick.
