A good face exfoliator is an essential part of any skincare regime. Depending on the type and strength of the chosen product, it is a good idea to exfoliate 2-3 times a week in order to lift any dead skin cells, clean out your pores and help your skin glow.
Before deciding, it’s important to know exactly what the process of exfoliating does. Pamela Marshall, Clinical Aesthetician and Co-Founder of Mortar & Milk explains: “Exfoliation promotes cell turnover, allowing old dead keratinocytes to shed to allow new healthy skin to come toward the surface. It is key to exfoliate on a regular basis to keep skin as smooth, bright and healthy-looking as possible.”
Available in two forms, physical and chemical, exfoliators have the ability to boost skin radiance and clarity. Physical exfoliators include scrubs that usually contain salt, grains or seeds to ‘buff’ away at dead skin cells. Chemical exfoliators include products that contain acids such as glycolic and salicylic as well as fruit enzymes such as pumpkin and pineapple.
However, over-exfoliating can also cause issues, so it’s important to follow each individual product’s directions thoroughly. “Exfoliating more than your skin needs can deplete its barrier function and cause capillary damage, leaving skin dehydrated and weak,” explains Pamela.
So which is best for you? Whether your skin is sensitive and dry or oily and congested, there’s an exfoliator out there suited to your concerns.
