Scared of bold colours? You might want to look away now.
Neon is making a major revival for summer with the fluorescent colours taking over every single beauty look on the catwalks, every celebrity eye crease and every damn influencer's nail designs.
Here's our ultimate guide to help you embrace the trend for the upcoming season, plus all the catwalk and Instagram inspo you need for reference.
The undisputed nail trend for summer is neon. The one rule? The brighter the better. From punchy yellows to bold blues and luminous lime greens, from Kylie Jenner to Rihanna, everyone is rocking neon nails on our Instagram feed. Perfect for poolside posing and the best way to complement a tan, neon is the only colour to plump for this season and mix-and-match is encouraged.
Switching it up from the traditional lash, models on the Dries Van Noten runway displayed bold, colourful lashes in a spectrum of bright hues and we'll all be reaching for a bolder mascara this season. Using shades of yellow, orange, blue, purple, red and green, makeup artist Peter Phillips is the master of adding neon mascara to both the top and bottom lashes for a feathery-full finish and it's so damn easy to get the look at home.
Brilliantly bold lines is the simplest way to trial the neon trend. Take cues from MUA Peter Phillips, who loves to give eyes neon, rainbow vibes. Coloured liner can be applied above and below the eyes, again in a range of neon shades to ensure your look pops.
Here's how to make sure you never get bold lipstick on your teeth ever again
We are taking it back to the 80s, where vibrant doll eyes popped at Anna Sui. Makeup artist Pat McGrath created the look by applying a coloured liner around the eye and in the crease of the lid. Mixing it up from your basic liner, striking lines of purple were featured just below the brow bone. Super-defined lashes complemented the look, giving us major Twiggy vibes.
You can’t do runway without a little glitter (read: 'a lot' of glitter). This season we are obsessing over OTT glitter masks inspired by makeup artist Val Garland for Giambattista Valli. Probably best reserved for festivals, faces radiating in an iridescent, neon glow are the perfect festival lewk - just remember to opt for biodegradable glitter.
Make like Kylie Jenner and Miley Cyrus and trial a bold new hair colour with a neon wigs. Our forever inspo is Jeremy Scott whose AW Moschino show looks were inspired by The Fifth Element; it’s been 20 years since the classic film was released. Hair stylist Eugene Souleiman put together bold, neon wigs with a blunt full fringe, shades of candy pink, sky blue, electric purple, citrus orange and lemon yellow made a statement.
